What the Heck is a Limiting Belief?
A limiting belief is a negative idea you have about yourself that tells you what you can’t do. Like a faulty computer program in your brain, these beliefs can originate either early in your life, or even from a past life! You may not even be aware that these beliefs are hanging around!
The types of beliefs present can be quite generic, and relate to your self worth. Others can be specific, such as:
- “I’ll always be overweight.”
- “I hate exercise.”
- “Healthy food is gross.”
These thoughts might seem small, but they drive your your unconscious choices about food, exercise, and how you see yourself.
Faulty Beliefs Create Faulty Behaviour
These limiting beliefs shape your unconscious behaviours. That means you might not even notice why you’re making excuses not to exercise, or binge eating potato chips.
If your brain thinks, “I’ll never lose weight anyway,” then your actions match that belief.
Your Core Beliefs and Core Identity
These limiting beliefs can be so powerful because they tie into your core belief (what you think is true about yourself) and your core identity (who you think you are). If your core identity is, “I’m just someone who’s always out of shape,” then that’s how you’ll act — even if you want to lose weight.
What Happens When You Address Your Limiting Beliefs?
When you address these beliefs, your actions start to shift too. Your subconscious mind notices these old, limiting messages are gone, and suddenly, you may begin making healthier choices, and doing so feels easier.
You will also feel more motivated to take aligned actions – that is, actions that are aligned not only with who you are, but also with your weight loss goal.
