One of the hardest things for an overweight person to face is the fact that is really is their fault they are overweight.
To lose weight, this is what you need to consider first.
Now, before you start sending me hate mail, let me explain.
There are usually one or two reasons why a person is overweight (there are of course people who suffer from medical conditions and I understand that this does not apply to them – but of course they account for a very small percentage of overweight people):
1. They eat too much of the wrong foods
2. They don’t exercise often enough (or at all)
Many of my clients are emotional eaters. When they’re upset or stressed about something, they start eating.
Of those who didn’t exercise often enough, many made excuse after excuse as to why they did not exercise that day.
Many complained that they didn’t have the time, or they were too tired – or whatever. The bottom line is this: They did not put exercise high enough on their list of priorities.
The same goes with food. We can choose whether to grab an apple or a chocolate cookie. We can also choose how much we have.
I remember telling someone one day that I’d just eaten a handful of M&M’s. She said that she would not have stopped at eating a handful and would have eaten the entire packet and was amazed that I was "strong" enough to resist!
I didn’t want more than a handful – that was more than enough for me! I was amazed that she was amazed!!
I was talking to a client about a situation yesterday and I told her that for someone to achieve a goal that requires sacrifices, they need to do this:
They need to perceive the positives of achieving that goal to be a LOT more significant than the negatives of not achieving their goal.
We all do what we do to avoid pain or to gain pleasure. If you think it is going to be a lot more painful to not lose weight than to lose it, even with the sacrifices you have to make, then your chances of success are so much higher.
So it is totally up to you! You got yourself here, and now it is time to fix it – and you can!
